An article in Manufacturing Management outlines a set of positive actions that can be taken to increase the number of women in the engineering professions and improve their career opportunities. While acknowledging a six percent increase in women in engineering between 2010 and 2021, the article points out that the representation of women in the profession is still far from equitable both in terms of numbers and in compensation.
Among the actions suggested to attract and retain more women engineers are expanded training to eliminate unconscious gender bias and investing in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programmes designed to better attract and retain women who are currently underrepresented is these fields. Those actions, plus working to eliminate the current 16.7 percent gender pay gap, are key elements of a sustainable solution to the challenge of finding and keeping women in the engineering professions.
